Lace is an ornamental open fabric, formed by looping, interlacing, braiding, plaiting or twisting threads to make a series of controlled holes. It has been manufactured in one form or another for over 300 years. The ingenuity of the "sons of Nottingham" ensured Nottingham Lace became the generic term for the exquisite British machine-made Lace

Within this genealogy and social history project, there is extensive subject content, complete with numerous illustrations, I have attempted to understand and appreciate the survival modes and social conditions within quite a tight and specific geographical area of families bearing my family name ALVEY.  This study has provided me with the understanding for me and hopefully for others of my generation who may choose to read this website content, with the appreciation of the sacrifices, living, working and social conditions which many of our ancestors had to accept to simply live and exist .. ..

However it has also raised again the "age-old" question of just why there appears so little consideration given to the ramifications of procreation

in times of strife and severe hardship .. .. ..

.. .. .. .. .. One Alvey male had 4 wives and fathered 18 children ??.!!  WOW !! Yes, and  in a period of strife and poverty too - in the mid/late 1700's
