Nottingham Lace IS SURELY in our genes … !!

“BACK in the BOX”- Burton Joyce
Elizabeth Cooke - Nottingham Lace
The “Alveys’ of Burton Joyce” have long time been associated with the activity of “Stockingers” ( the fore-runners of lace making ) documented from the mid 1700’s, developing into “Bagmen” in the mid 1800’s and early 1900. At one point an early census return noted that “Abel Alvey” of Burton Joyce - a “Bagman“ controlled 100+ home workers in the surrounding villages. His son known locally as “Nockling John - the Bagman“, continued the business into the 1900’s (he was given the name locally as he had a habit of nodding his head .. .. .. Even our Grand mother's side was involved in FWK
As can be seen from the Alvey TimeLine we, the present generation returned to our roots in 1971, without any knowledge of our genealogy. It was quite staggering that some 30 years later (2002/2), several years after we had created "Elizabeth Cooke - Nottingham Lace" and "The World of Lace" and after winning the coveted “Best Local Product” Award given by Nottinghamshire Tourism Authority (1993), we became aware of our roots and ancestry, and our "modern-day" use of the practices used in the mid to late 1800’s by the then Alveys of Burton Joyce “Bagmen” - Abel and son John.- Quite coincidental !!..??
Our initial concept for our Nottingham Lace operation developed into serving 146 outlets nationwide - Tourism Shops, Historic Houses and Castles. National Trust properties, Centre Parc Holiday Villages, Motorway Service Stations Gift Shops, Hotels and Visitors Centres, through-out the country. Regretfully the last national Foot and Mouth epidemic (UK) resulted in the Countryside becoming “Closed overnight” which naturally resulted in Tourism levels plummeting. As a result we had to immediately cease and revise our conventional marketing operation via these retail outlets and redirected our sales efforts. Fortunately this period was coincidental with the very early years of the new www and Internet, which we embraced completely and began the difficult job of establishing confidence in this new medium and ourselves as operator - selling direct to the consumer.. .. .. Today we are well established in cyberspace marketing (10 plus years) - a redirection with no regrets.
Several years ago we also established close links with the reputable, well established, internet marketing company - “DISTINCTLY BRITISH” this established a complimentary, reliable, secure, accredited and reputable online buying facility demanded by consumers
We now offer a number of specially created Collections, selected by "Elizabeth" for their individual quality and exclusive design. We have grouped the products into exclusive lifestyle collections, which typify precisely the skills and heritage of Nottingham and British Lace manufacturing ingenuity. see Homes, Brides & Lifestyles
***In 1993 our company was nominated for, and declared the winner of Nottinghamshire Tourism Authority’s “Best of Nottinghamshire” award in the “Best Local Product” category - indicative of the skills and heritage of the county. An event not featured nor determined in subsequent years ***
To reiterate The "Alvey's of Burton Joyce" is also known as "Elizabeth Cooke - Nottingham Lace", sometimes referred to as “ecnl” and "The World of Lace"
